Abstract:
The waiting list for surgery presents itself as a problem relating to the provision of medical care in most developed countries. For this reason it is important to know and understand the reality that frames this problem in order to improve the process of implementation and management of waiting lists’ related measures. The research work presented in this paper aims to analyse the time spent by Portuguese individuals, by gender, in a waiting list over a period of 19 years (from 1990 to 2009). The applied analysis uses the duration econometric methodology that includes the Kaplan-Meier and Nelson-Aalen non-parametric estimators. By calculating the probability of survival (risk), it is possible to compute, for an individual, the time spell between entry and exit from the waiting list. The analysis is made for all the population and by gender. The waiting time for surgery is, in average, between 2 to 3 months. Considering gender, it is observed that female users remain longer in the waiting list.
