Abstract:
The main aims of this paper are to highlight the casual links between human capital, productivity and growth and to show empirical evidence on the consequences that health problems, and in particularly those that affect specially most developed countries, have on growth and human potential. In this context, we analyse the impact and magnitude of a higher level of education and of the population health status on per capita income growth of OECD and EU countries. Using a panel data model for the 1980–2004 period and fixed effects methods, we conclude that the inclusion of health variables that reflect chronic diseases adds explanation power to the growth model having a negative and statistically significant impact.
