Title: SATISFACTION WITH ACADEMIC LIFE IN STUDENTS OF PORTUGUESE PUBLIC HIGHER EDUCATION

Abstract:
To determine the level of academic satisfaction in higher education students from the 1st cycle and to verify if there are statistically significant differences at the level of academic satisfaction taking into account gender, age, scientific area and the year attended are the main objectives of this study. For this purpose, a cross-sectional, observational and quantitative study was developed.
Data collection occurred in April 2012. A non-probabilistic accidental sample of 686  students from the 1st cycle of four scientific areas, namely, Health, Technology, Education and Agriculture was collected. After validation of the data collected through a questionnaire, the IBM SPSS 20.0 statistical software was used to process the data. Such processing involved the use of descriptive statistics; exploratory factor analysis; Cronbach's Alpha; R-Pearson test; t-Student test; One-Way ANOVA; Tukey test, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test; and, Bartlett's sphericity  test.
It was found that, in general, students' academic satisfaction is high. However, in all dimensions considered, namely, satisfaction with the degree, Opportunity and Development, and satisfaction with the institution, there are aspects that can be improved.
