Abstract:
This study aims to assess the Nutritional Status of patients in Long Term Care Facilities (LTCF). For this purpose, an observational, analytical and cross-sectional study was conducted . This study involved 14 LTCFs from the Northern Region of Portugal. This study involved 265 individuals - 147 female (55.5%) and 118 male (44.5%). The average age was 75.5 years. Two questionnaires were used, the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) from the Nestlé Nutrition Institute and a second questionnaire developed by the authors. The MNA was used to determine the nutritional status of individuals and the second questionnaire was designed to assess parameters relating to food provided to the user as well as the period of admission. The results revealed that 59% of individuals were malnourished, 34.9% were at risk of malnutrition and 6.1% had a normal nutritional status. It was further observed that statistically, gender, pathologies, the diet texture and nutritional supplements have a significant influence on the Nutritional Status for the reason that the p-value < 0.05. In turn, the age and nutritional composition does not influence the Nutritional Status because the p-value > 0.05. Therefore, it was concluded that most individuals admitted in LTCFs were malnourished.
