The two scientists with the same name José Júlio Bettencourt Rodrigues, father and son, have performed changes in experimental teaching by explaining their professional pathways, which we will observe in their successes and failures. The first, born in 1843, died in 1893, leaving numerous initiatives in research and industry incomplete, due to management unskillfulness. As we shall see, he set up the subject of technology for the business degree and defended experimental teaching as the basis for economic development.
The second, born in 1876, entered the University of Coimbra in 1893, where he studied chemistry. He also studied it in Belgium twice, bringing to Portugal changes in the teaching of Experimental Science, and inspiring the reform of Sobral Cid in 1914.
In Rio de Janeiro he developed educational experiences at a secondary and higher education level and, between 1920 and 1929, through the teaching of chemical engineering in Recife, contributed to the technological change of Pernambuco.
He returned to Faro in Portugal, in 1929, where his rectorship ended badly because of the infighting of the local National Union, where he was district leader, and as a consequence he went back to Brazil. He returned to Portugal in 1936, taught science, founded the Group of Brazilian Studies in Porto, wrote children's stories and a novel about social drama. In 1946, he returned to Brazil to die there in 1948.
