Abstract:
The importance of the Tourism scientific area in the Portuguese Higher Education (HE) system requires an interpretation and analysis of its education and training background. The Portuguese academic institutions have invested significantly in this area of study since the 86/87 school year. Furthermore, the Bologna Process led to significant changes in the philosophy and structure of HE courses, particularly at the level of the curriculum and of the teaching-learning process. Therefore, we will characterize the Institution and the educational project of the School of Tourism and Hospitality (ESTH) from the Polytechnic Institute of Guarda and analyse secondary information on key indicators about course supply and demand for this Institution. The goal of this study is to interpret and demonstrate the need to understand student demand for this area at a national level, focusing for the most part on ESTH, in order to understand the evolution and trends in HE in Tourism. Some results allow us to perceive a certain unsustainability of the current HE network that is, of course, projected also in the scientific area of Tourism due, in part, to the excessive growth in the number of courses at a national level which, in our perspective, restricts ESTH’s educational project.
