Abstract:
The Sanatorium Sousa Martins was he most important institution in Guarda during the first half of the twentieth century. In a troubled period of political, economic and social life, on the eve of the establishment of the Republic in Portugal, the inauguration of this unit of health (the first to be built by the National Assistance for Tuberculous - ANT) meant a moment of truce by the ideological sectors in the city at that time. According to the regional and local press, the reading one can make is unanimous in seing the Sanatorium as a health resort in the vanguard of a treatment for a disease that decimated thousands of portuguese; on the other hand, the Guarda tradition of hospitality and nobility in welcoming someone prevailed on a conjuncture of divergences. The city was prepared to receive festively the King Carlos I and Queen Amélia.
