Abstract:
The main goal of this investigation is to evaluate patient’s knowledge about medicine in use and to verify whether there are significant differences regarding gender, age and the education level.
This type of research is analytical, transversal and observational. The sample is constituted by 398 people from the town of Bragança. A survey was conducted through a questionnaire that assessed the knowledge concerning the medicine in use. Data collection was made between February and April of 2012. The collected information was analyzed by SPSS, with the usual statistics methodology. The Mann-Whitney test was used to compare 2 independent groups and the Kruskal-Wallis test to compare 3 independent groups. The significance level applied was 5%.
Of the total respondents, most are female (65, 3%), married (47,5%), with an average age of 39,6 (SD=15,9) and possess secondary education (38,2 %) or higher education (34,7%). In the preceding year, 82,7% of the respondents took medication, being the average of different medications taken by respondents about 3,6 (SD=2,3). Of these, currently 58,7% (131) respondents present a reasonable knowledge level about the medicine in use. The respondents who were female, younger and have higher education qualifications have demonstrated a higher knowledge level about the medicine in use.
