Abstract:
Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for about 30% of deaths in Portugal. Because hypercholesterolemia is a cardiovascular risk factor, monitoring of cholesterol levels is fundamental in the prevention of cardiovascular complications. In phytotherapy, one of the uses of Rue (Ruta graveolens) is for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of those interviewed on using Rue in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, through the application of a questionnaire survey. Of those surveyed, 44% knew the Rue plant, 10% had knowledge of its application for therapeutic purposes and 3.6% said that they have used Rue in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. The pre-clinical evidence in animal models, supported by ethnobotanical data, indicates a promising future for Rue usage in the reduction of high cholesterol
