Abstract:
Research has found a positive association between exercise and better perception of health status in older people although few studies on interventions in less controlled community context support this association. The objective of this study was to understand the dependency relationship between physical exercise and the respective improvement in the quality of life of individuals over age 70 . This crosssectional study involved 250 subjects (74.8% female), recruited in northern Portugal and evaluated according to four different contexts. Group 1 (n=148) identifies elderly community-dwellersengaged in physical exercise programs; Group 2 (n=41) includes community elderly not involved in regular physical activity; Groups 3 (N=37) and 4 (N=24) correspond to the elderly in day care centers and institutions, respectively, and who do not exercise. The SF-36 questionnaire in eight domains was used to evaluate the perception of health status. Multiple linear regression was performed to test the trends between groups. Regardless of age, in the fields of Physical Function, Mental Health and Vitality, a significant trend was observed with the best results from the elderly involved in exercise programs. Intervention programs based on exercise have an important impact on different dimensions that provide quality of life for the elderly.
