Title: EVALUATION OF ANAEROBIC PERFORMANCE IN YOUNG SWIMMERS USING LABORATORY AND SPORT SPECIFIC TESTS

Abstract:
Evaluation of the anaerobic fitness in young athletes is essential for achieving sporting success in swimming. The objective of this study was to evaluate anaerobic performance in young swimmers using a laboratory test and a field test and correlate their variables. The sample consisted of 13 young swimmers, including 5 boys (with an average of 12.8 years old, 163.6 cm tall and weighing 51.2 kg) and 8 girls (with an average of 11.6 years old, 154.7 cm tall and weighing 50.6 kg). The maturational level, through self-assessment, was 3.4 for boys and 3.3 for girls, not statistically different between the sexes. Participants took the Wingate anaerobic test and the anaerobic critical velocity test and the Spearman correlation coefficient (SPSS, version 17.0) was used. The mean values (DP) of the peak power, mean power and anaerobic critical velocity were 387.8 (83.5) W, 291.6 (61.6) W and 1.36 (0.15) m·s-1, respectively. Significant correlations were observed between the variable of peak power and anaerobic critical velocity (r=0.663; p=0.014) and between the average absolute anaerobic power and anaerobic critical velocity (r=0.704, p=0.007). The results suggest that both tests are useful for the evaluation of the anaerobic fitness of young swimmers, providing general and specific variables of the peak anaerobic power and maximal anaerobic capacity and can be used throughout the season during the preparatory and competitive periods, respectively.
