Western societies are consumser societies where materialism has an important role (McCracken, 199). With two samples of Portuguese university student, the first one obtained in 1996 with 500 inquiries, and the other obtained in 2005 with 143 inquiries, we compare the materialism values between those young students adapting Richins and Dawson (1992) Materialism Values Scale (MVS). Through confirmatory factorial analysis using the structural equations models, we estimated the differences in materialistic feelings between the two generations presented in the samples. With the materialism evaluation between groups we attempted to establish a second order multigroup model. The significant difference in the way they look at success in materialistic terms shows that the current generation of youth has a lower anxiety level in evaluating their own success and that of others based on material goods, just as we also found that centrality factor contributes less to materialism levels among all the young people studied.
