Abstract:
Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease with a bacterial aetiology characterized by chronic inflammation affecting the supporting tissues of the teeth. A possible association between physical activity and/or fitness and periodontal disease has been considered in the literature. The purpose of this article is to review literature in the Pubmed database of human studies on the relationship between physical activity and periodontal disease. Research was performed in Pubmed database of human studies, to assess the influence of physical activity on periodontitis. Four theories on inflammation, metabolism, psychosocial aspects and blood flow were mentioned that could link these two concepts: inflammatory metabolic, psychosocial and blood flow theories. We found a total of fFour studies were selected that linked physical fitness with periodontitis, of which t. Three alluded to a relationship between higher levels of cardiorespiratory fitness and better periodontal health and while the other one did not relate physical fitness with periodontitis . AnotherWe also identified three studies that have associated low levels of physical activity to an increased frequency of periodontitis. Due to limited availability of longitudinal studies, it is difficult to consider the low physical fitness and/or physical activity as a risk factor for periodontal disease.
