Abstract:
This study examined offensive patterns of performance of national indoor football teams using network analysis. Six official matches of the European Championship (2014) were analysed and 36 offensive sequences of play were identified. Using SocNetV 0.81 software, we computed values for density (%DE), betweenness centrality (%BC) and closeness centrality (%CC). Offensive sequences of play resulting in a goal suggested a direct style of play, with less passing, while offensive sequences of play ending with a shot on goal indicated a more elaborate passing game. We also found a tendency for successful shooting occurring from the penalty area of the pitch and unsuccessful shooting occurring from lateral areas of the pitch. This study offers relevant implications for structuring the training process to explore critical pitch areas for a successful offense.
