Abstract:
Pollen is a biological structure produced in higher plants with seeds that is vital to their sexual reproduction. As a result of the reproductive process, pollen can trigger allergic reactions in people such as skin inflammation, conjunctivitis, and allergic rhinitis, among other symptoms.
The development of pollen calendars allows clinicians to adjust medical treatments and simultaneously enables patients to take preventive actions. In Portugal, the monitoring of pollen concentration in the atmosphere and its prediction has been carried out, since 2004, by the Portuguese Aerobiology Network, which broadcasts a weekly newsletter with the pollen forecasts.
There are a number of methods for monitoring the evolution of the pollen concentration in the air. In Europe, the Hirst method is the most often used for clinical application and has some variants which will be demonstrated and systematized in this article.
