Abstract:
Different studies show that medication errors can occur at any stage of the prescription and administration process as an important public health problem with serious consequences for patients and for healthcare organizations. The prevention of medication errors is considered an indicator of healthcare quality and is a source of growing concern among current health policies.
This paper follows a descriptive approach and it was based on the analysis and interpretation of scientific publications, with the objectives: to know and explore concepts related to medication error taxonomy, causal and contributing factors; systematize the impact / magnitude and consequences of errors associated with medication; and propose some risk management strategies associated with the circuit of the medication. The proposed measures gather scientific evidence in this field and work in daily practice to guarantee an effective, efficient and safe healthcare intervention.
