Abstract:
The requirement of budgetary rigor forces a rationalization of resources and expenditure that includes the reduction of health expenditure, in particular with pharmaceutical products. Several public policies have contributed to the reduction and control of this expenditure although little is known about the impact of the reduction in the health indicators of the population covered. Thus, it is analysed the evolution of per capita expenditure on pharmaceutical products and its impact on the evolution of health indicators in the European Union using internationally comparable data and through the panel data methodology combining temporal and cross-section statistical information. It was concluded that exists a relationship between the variation in the per capita expenditure on pharmaceuticals and the variation observed in health indicators, and that some health indicators show the same pattern of evolution over time, independently of the country under analysis, while others present an evolution dependent on specific characteristics of each economy..
