Abstract:
The text, after a brief theoretical framework, is based on the content analysis centered on the references to the play activity (words, phrases, texts and images) of four learning to read books used in Portugal in the first quarter of the 20th century. The central problem is to try to understand if traditional play activities occupy a specific space and have some function in the messages of these pedagogical materials. We will see, in conclusion, that the pedagogical use of children's play experience turns out to be diminutive, which can be interpreted as some devaluation by the school curricula, at the time, of the worlds and cultures of childhood

Keywords: playbook, curriculum, toy, traditional game, childhood cultures
