Abstract:
The central subject of this article concerns the recreational and corporal activities described, or simply mentioned, in the Books that constitute the work "Saudades da Terra", written by the priest and Azorean chronicler Gaspar Frutuoso at end of the XVI century. Through analysis of the work, we intend to record the physical and recreational activities mentioned, which were later organized in a typology of four categories: hunting practices; ludic practices on holidays; ball games; and corporal practices of strength and dexterity. The author refers to or describes several games practiced in the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores. Most of these body exercises were maintained in Portugal and other European countries until the midtwentieth century, and some, thanks to improvement, gave birth to modern sports. Given the profusion of information regarding the ludic and corporal practices of the islanders, it is considered that this work constitutes a valuable source for the history of sports in Portugal.
