Intimacy and close relationships are the main characteristics of family violence, which grows from inside the family and can accompany all the vital cycle. Health professionals, because of their proximity to the family, have an important role in the prevention, detection and follow up of these cases. The objective of this is to understand more clearly this phenomenon, its specificity in the family context and the opportunities to intervene. It presents a review of the literature and follows the guidelines of international organizations and the main intervention guides of reference. Family violence happens usually in times of crises and can be stimulated by cultural traditions and social silence. Historically it has overcome the social acceptance and become legally a public crime. It affects couples, homo and heterosexual, married or dating, child and elderly abuse, female genital mutilation and its cyclical feature is a risk factor for the mortality of the victim. In Portugal statistics show that women are the main victims and the aggressor is usually a former or ex-partner. The intervention of health professionals and their efficiency implies the knowledge and preparation to identify, support, record, evaluate, and refer these cases correctly.
