Abstract:
Property, Plant and Equipment (PPE) represents, in general, the most relevant asset of the Financial Statements of the entity. The aim of this research is to analyse the legal framework of the International Accounting Standard 16, which was the basis of the Accounting Standards and Financial Reporting 7, enhancing the measurement of PPE, particularly, its subsequent measuring, since the entity may elect either the cost model or the revaluation model. As research methodology, a literature review is proposed, for the theoretical analysis, through a research of the literature of IAS 16 – PPE, and for the empirical analysis, through case study, based on Yin (2008), supported by the National Railway Network - REFER, EPE, from 2009 to 2014. The analysis of the year 2014 justifies itself because it is the most recent one and because it shows economic results with definitive new data and the year 2009 justifies the information source for, according to Martins (2007), an ideal period of time of 5 years in order to to allow an evolution analysis of the entity. The results demonstrate that, due to the specific character of the activity that it develops, REFER provides AFT information substantially different from the entities as a whole, namely Investment activity in Long Term Infrastructures and in Infrastructure Management.
