Title: BIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF PAPAYA (CARICA PAPAYA L.) SEEDS: VALORIZATION OF A FOOD WASTE

Abstract:
The interest for the reuse of the different parts of the fruits and vegetables has come to increase, with intention to not only promote the environmental sustainability, as well as for the beneficial properties that some authors have already identified. The content in bioactive compounds of papaya seeds, that are almost always wasted,led to the study of alternative uses of this residue. In this context, the total phenolics and flavonoids contents of the Carica papaya L. seeds were quantified, evaluating also its antioxidant activity.
The obtained results allowed to conclude that the content in bioactive compounds is influenced by the extractor solvent (water or ethanol). The aqueous extract contained higher concentration of flavonoids while the ethanolic extract evidenced greater amount of phenolics. The antioxidant activity was evaluated, using ascorbic acid as control. Although the antioxidant activity of the ascorbic acid has been superior to the one of the two extracts, these could be used as natural antioxidant, allowing the ethanolic extract take higher benefit of the antioxidant activity of bioactive compounds of the Carica papaya L. seeds.
Despite the evidences that the seeds of the papaya can be used as natural antioxidant in alimentary and pharmaceutical industries, it is necessary to deepen the research to evaluate its toxicity.
