The purpose of this study is to evaluate the weight of the backpacks of the 5th grade students, to identify complaints of lumbar, cervical and / or dorsal pain on the part of the children and to enable children in healthy posture habits. For this purpose, an activity was developed by the professionals of the Community Care Unit (UCC) Assucena Lopes Teixeira, related to the correct transport and packaging of school supplies in the backpack. All children and their backpacks were weighed and children questioned about whether it was common to have the cervical, lumbar and / or dorsal pain. In this study 481 children participated, 49.9% male and 50.1% female, with ages ranging from 9 to 13 years. The weight of the backpacks varied between 1.5kg and 13.5kg. It was found that 74.8% of the children (70.4% of the boys and 79.3% of the girls) carried a backpack weighing more than 10% of their body weight. With regard to cervical, lumbar and / or dorsal pain, 16.8% of the boys and 33.6% of the girls reported feeling this symptom. In conclusion, girls, compared to boys, were the ones who carried greater weight and the ones who reported having cervical, lumbar and / or dorsal pains.
