Abstract:
This article is a result of an investigation developed with a first year class of the 1st Basic Education Cycle (CEB) in a Portuguese public school. The outline presented aims to know the perceptions and participation of the children with regard to their ludic experiences in school routines. The methodology used was interviews with two focus groups and observations in the school environment. The most important results to be highlighted are: Games and child’s play appear as experiences valued by children. Gender and ethnic stereotypes are present in the interactions among children and it conditions participation in games and child’s play, as well as the priority use of the playground by one of the genres. In classroom children’s initiatives subvert normative code that determines the individual and silent work, adding a ludic component and body mobility. This effort is not opposed to “school work”, yet children’s competence to conciliate their performance as children and pupils remains unknown. The conclusions of the study point to the need to question this model of schooling of specific children and analyse their contribution.
