Abstract:
Being elderly is a plural condition of those who have the privilege of having a long life. The elderly condition nowadays reflects diversified behaviour patterns of different lifestyles that can best be understood by analysing case studies. This case study of the village of Aldeia do Bispo (in the town of Sabugal, district of Guarda), with 117 elderly, independent residents, illustrates special characteristics of the aging process in rural areas. This population demonstrates a discouraged psychological condition, although resignation and low expectations about the future tend to dissimulate this state of mind.
