Abstract:
The interiority did not prevent Beira’s elites, at the end of eight hundreds and first decades of nine hundred, to access new social customs and emerging ideologies. Of curious and entrepreneur spirit, and certainly ambitious, they held the economic power which allowed them to transpose the provincial boundaries and receive the news, either through national and foreign press or directly through public personalities with whom they had relationships. Many of them inherited their social and political prominence, but others did awaken to an social active role by an intellectual and political education. As local leaders, they were message transmitters and (re)decoders of press texts to oral messages, in order to ensure their comprehension by those less educated. The members that integrated these elites that ensured the start-up and development of journalistic movement in Beira Interior is the central question of this article, to be answered, especially with the information obtained from the content analysis of newspapers.
