Methodology: the research was made following scientific databases: EBSCO Host, B-ON, SAGE, SciELO and in an extended group of Portuguese and International dissertations and thesis. Results: four primary studies and two systematic literature reviews were considered. Nevertheless some detected limitations, it was demonstrated that the Systematic Relaxation and the Jaw Relaxation are efficient in the reduction and control of postoperative pain in patients submitted to abdominal surgery. Conclusions: majority of the studies had deficient methodologies that limit the conclusions about the interventions made. Future studies should explore the efficiency of: relaxation techniques on the elderly people; the application of Systematic Relaxation, Jaw Relaxation, Progressive Muscular Relaxation and Autogenic Training, in non postoperative pain situations.
