Abstract:
The main objective of this study is to find out how fifth-to-ninth-grade teenagers from the Municipality of Bragança spend their free time. For this study, a survey was conducted among 536 teenagers aged between 10 and 18 years old. During weekdays, over 90% of the respondents chose activities such as watching television, chatting with friends, studying/doing homework and doing physical exercise. Statistically, significant differences were found between the time spent in leisure activities by males and females such as listening to music, using the computer, going to the arcade, reading, doing physical exercise, studying, going to the cinema/theatre, helping with the household tasks, shopping/window shopping, attending painting/photography lessons and dating. Results show differences among group ages in activities such playing a musical instrument, reading, studying/doing homework, going to the catechesis, painting/photography classes, listening to music, using the computer, surfing the Internet, spending time with friends, going to the arcade, going to the coffee shop and dating. It was found that, during the week, there were a direct correlation between BMI and some leisure activities, namely, listening to music, using the computer, helping in the household tasks, dating and use the mobile phone. However, the practice of physical exercise registered an inverse correlation with BMI.
