Abstract:
The creation of the Single Market and the consolidation of the integration process in the European Union (EU) led to the abolition of the borders of the Member States which functioned as an obstacle to free movement of persons, goods and services and capital. The idea was to promote the development of relations with neighbouring countries, strengthen the position of regions and thus increase competitiveness. Thus, this paper aims to examine whether the opening of borders has or hasn’t brought gains in competitiveness for the border regions of Portugal and Spain. It is intended to verify whether there was a reduction or worsening of asymmetries in these regions compared to their countries. Resulting from this hypothesis we can study the regions which gained / lost competitiveness with open borders. The study focuses on the central lane border regions of Portugal and Spain: Raia Central Ibérica, which covers a territory composed of the five NUTS III at the border, during the period 1988-2007.
